How to Use A Nail Gun Safely & Beginner's Maintenance Guide

Knock Knock, who’s there?Must be our fellow Beginner DIYers. To use a nail gun is relatively straightforward, but to use it safely,it is important to follow safety precautions and operating instructions to prevent potential accidents,or,let’s put it this way,to learn how to fail in a safer way before success.Actually it goes along for any other activities, learn how to do it safely before you get started!
And today we’ll lead you all the way safely to the end;)
The first thing to do is,of course,Read the Manual, well, everyone knows that but actually few people truly value the importance of reading the manual thoroughly.Everyone believes it’s much easier to figure it out while using the nailer, but here’s the catch, reading the manual is not just about“how to”,user manual usually contains essential information about operating procedures, safety precautions, maintenance guidelines and warranty info.,the time you take to read the manual is mostly for the last 3 things. Therefore, please read manual first my dearest fellow Beginners!
Now,congratulations! You’ve earned enough EXP to go to the next level! What are you saying?Operating a nail gun? No,my young adventurer,it’s still not the time for starting using the nail gun,it’s Safety Gear time!

Have you seen any horror movie recently?Nail gun for wood?More like nail gun for killer!
Even though you’ve read the manual, there’s still too many things can go wrong,so get prepared for it!Safety glasses/goggles and gloves are the essentials you should be wearing, advanced equipment including ear plugs/ear muffs, hard hat, face shield and etc.Changing into some sturdy and comfortable work-oriented clothes would help, too.
Next is to Prepare and Check Your Work Area, make sure you have a relatively open and clean space, which has no obstructions that may interfere with your work or generate potential flying debris
Time to Pick Your Nail Gun!But before we dive into that, what are we working on here?Building a pet house?Install trim?Lots of heavy remodeling work?Or just want to staple some files?Make sure you have the correct size&type of nailers for your project.Wrong size/type of nails or wrong type of nail gun can result in improper fastening or damage to the material. How to pick a nail gun?this is another good topic for later, which you can find the answer in our other featured articles.
For beginners and home DIYers, the most common and safe choices are brad nailer and finish nailer,a 2-in-1 nail gun that can load both brad nails and crown staples are the best!if there’s lots of remodeling work that involves installing thick baseboards or large door and window case moldings, and you’ll probably use it a lot on a daily basis,a cordless finish nail gun would be the absolutely best choice. And if you just want to get some light duty/home DIY project done, like install reasonable number of interior trim and molding, build a pet house, repair the bench...A JOVANT cordless brad nail gun would come in handy and would worth the money you spend, cause JOVANT cordless brad nail gun--A 2-in1 nail gun for both brad nails and crown staples, which was commonly used for it’s home friendly operation and wide application.

Of course,we have to mention that air-powered nail gun is much more affordable, almost 1/3 of a cordless one,but air-powered nail gun is cheaper only under the condition that you’ve already owned an air compressor(which costs almost as much as a cordless nail gun); Also a big compressor and the wires lying around would of course bring more risks. As for corded electric nail gun,it’s about half of the price as a cordless one,but after all the wire dragging and Length limitation, you’ll find the cordless nail gun a much better choice in the long term, don’t even mention that you cannot work outdoors with corded nail guns due to the socket limitation. But again, the choice is yours to make,my fellow Beginner DIYers.
Alrighty!Things are about to get more intense now, time to Load the Nail Gun!Typically, this involves sliding open the magazine, load the nailer's magazine with brads/staples of the desired type, and closing it securely. There are too many sizes and types of nails to talk about,we don’t want to confuse you here,so just buy the size&type that the seller recommended. However, here’s one thing I HAVE to emphasis:
1.Do not try to use brads shorter than your nail gun’s recommended range! While they may fit the tool, they are likely to get jammed at the power tip and would be hard to get out.
2.Do not try to load your brad nailer with finish nails, which are usually 15 or 16-gauge fasteners, and should be much thicker.Even if they are short enough, finish nails are too thick to feed through a brad nailer.
Surely it’s time to Turn on the Power Source.Next step is to Adjust Depth Setting(if available),some nail guns offer the option to adjust the depth, which proves beneficial in achieving the desired finish without causing the nails to be over-driven.It is typically recommended to use nails that are approximately three times longer than the thickness of the workpiece being fastened.
Please note that the desired depth for driving the brads can vary from project to project.Keep the following tips in mind when checking the depth setting:
If you set the depth too shallow, you’ll get a protruding head, which is undesirable.Cause even If you try to hammer the nail the rest of the way in,you'll only bend it over.
On the other hand, slightly countersinking the nail head is fine, but if it's too far below the surface, the nail won't sufficiently hold the material in place, especially with materials that lacks density.
Excited to try out your new nail gun?But Uh-uh,not yet,my fellow Beginner DIYers.First you have to Position Your Nail Gun.With the nail gun tip pressed firmly down against the workpiece so that the contact tip is depressed. It is crucial to find the workpiece contact point on the"muzzle"end of your nailer. This contact point depresses when you push the nailer against your workpiece.Another thing is that most nail guns have a safety mechanism that prevents accidental firing. As you position the nail gun against the workpiece, keep in mind that the nails will actually fire slightly ahead of the contact point.
Ok,now we are just one step away from getting started, before the real work, always Test on Scrap Material. It can be helpful to fire a few nails at scrap wood of the same type and thickness as your workpiece in order to fine-tune the depth controls before beginning the actual work.
Finally!Let’s nail something right now!
Ka-pow!
We are done here:)
Remember to adjust the depth when the material thickness or type changes during working.

Well, please keep that in mind,we are not finished here, what’s after the work is usually the most important on safe usage. For one is to Disconnect Power Source. If you're using a pneumatic nail gun, disconnect it from the air compressor after the work is done; For corded models, unplugging and put away the wires(in case for anyone to trip over); For the cordless models, remove the battery will be enough.
It is also recommend to do a Safety Check every time before leaving your work area, ensure that the nail gun is turned off(if applicable),and all nails have been removed from the magazine to prevent rusting and accidental discharge when next time you use it.
And after a good reading on all that tips above,we believe you are ready to move on to the Beginner's Maintenance Guide for Your Nail Gun.
1.A brad/finish nail gun maintenance is a fairly simple task. After each use, make sure to clean it from any dirt or debris and store it in a relatively dry place. It is best to keep the magazine empty of nails when storing the tool.
2.For battery-powered tools,it is important to begin each work session with a fully charged battery. If the tool will be stored for a long period, remove the battery and store both the tool and battery at room temperature.Avoid storing them in extreme temperatures as it can reduce the battery's lifespan.
3.Regularly lubricate your nail gun as per the manufacturer's guidelines to maintain its performance and longevity. If the magazine or other metal parts develop corrosion any how,the most affordable and common way to do it is wiping them down with a rag dampened with light machine oil.
Last but not the least,a few additional tips for our fellow beginner DIYers.

Remember to always operate with caution when using power tools, and if you're unsure about any details of operating the nail gun, consult the user manual or seek guidance from someone experienced in its use.
Always ensure the tool is pointed away from you when adjusting the depth, and remember to take out the battery(if present),unplug the power cord and release any compressed air before reloading the magazine or clearing a nail jam.
Knowing when to replace your nail gun is crucial for maintaining efficient and safe woodworking or DIY operations. While a well-maintained brad nailer can last for decades,it's important to be vigilant for signs of wear and tear.If you use your nailer occasionally, you may notice gradual wear on the magazine and power tip over time. However,if you rely on your nailer extensively on a daily basis, you may experience more rapid deterioration.
One key indicator that it's time to replace your nailer is when the parts start feeling loose or unstable. This can affect the tool's performance and compromise the quality of your work, and even bring potential hazards. If you find that your nailer no longer drives nails correctly regardless of how many adjustments you make,it's also a clear sign that it needs to be replaced.
Alternatively,if replacing is not an option currently, you can seek the expertise of a tool repair specialist who can examine your nailer and replace any worn parts. This option can be particularly beneficial if you have a high-quality nailer that you wish to prolong its lifespan.By addressing any issues promptly, you can ensure that your nailer continues to serve you effectively in your projects.
I think that’s all for how to use a nail gun and the nail gun maintenance today, see you guys in the next article!
